Most of us love nothing more than sitting on a Caribbean or Indian Ocean island, sun on our skin, cocktail in hand, surrounded by fellow sun-seekers. But every now and then, that inner Indiana Jones stirs—the urge to explore, discover, and step off the well-worn path.
Our 20-day adventure through Costa Rica this November was exactly that. Organised flawlessly by great friends and our trusted travel partners at Lateral Life, it took us to five extraordinary locations showcasing the very best this remarkable country offers.
Having landed and acclimatised in San Joes at a lovely Coffee Plantation we began our trip in earnest began in the central rainforest at Pacuare Lodge, immersed in dense jungle alive with birdcall and wildlife. From there we travelled to the Caribbean coast and Tortuga Lodge, where we watched baby turtles hatch and launch themselves into the waves—a moment of pure wonder. Next came at La Fortuna, home of the iconic Arenal Volcano, its mist-shrouded slopes dominating the skyline.
From the centre of the country we headed south to the Pacific coast and Palya Cativo Lodge, where we were lucky enough to witness whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. Finally, we travelled north to the spectacular coastline of Tierra Magnifica Lodge, a place of sweeping beaches, incredible surf and sunsets that stopped us in our tracks.
Thanks to Lateral Life, we had the best rooms in each lodge, seamless private transfers (including small planes—far less extravagant than it sounds, and by far the most efficient way to travel), and the comfort of knowing every detail had been expertly handled.
The Costa Rican people are among the friendliest you will ever meet. The food was superb. And although the climate was wet during our visit, the temperature sat at a warm, consistent 28°C—perfect for exploring.
What struck us most were the people we met along the way: all like-minded adventurers chasing the same thrill of discovery.
