Sabbatical trip to South America.

Our challenge to Steve and Nick: ‘We have a six week trip in mind – autumn 2016. Help us explore and discover South America as active travellers, rather than tourists’.

They rose to the task. Having just returned, we can say the trip was everything we hoped for and more.

A unique, once-in-a-lifetime, experience through often spectacularly remote parts of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Galápagos Islands.

The planning – which in our case started almost two years earlier – was half the fun. Nick and Steve share a love of travelling themselves.

Steve speaks fluent Spanish. They both know S America really well. Their first hand experience and knowledge was evident from the start. It was invaluable.

They took time to get to know us – our likes and dislikes. It felt like personal attention from people who knew their stuff.

We wanted to be active – hiking, biking, riding etc. We wanted to follow less trodden paths, without missing the ‘must see’ places.

We didn’t want any tourist ‘experiences’ or packaged excursions.

We wanted comfortable places to stay but we didn’t mind roughing it to reach somewhere special.

We didn’t need 5 star resorts all the way.

The result was a highly customised trip that delivered all the above.

The highlight? Probably swimming with the penguins in Galápagos Islands.

However, that was just one moment in six fantastic weeks of immersion in the wildlife, culture, landscape, history, geology, cuisine and people of South America.

An amazing and memorable journey.
